Overview
COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a progressive lung disease that makes breathing difficult. It includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Smoking is the leading cause. There is no cure, but symptoms can be managed.
When to See a Doctor
See a doctor if you have chronic cough, mucus production, shortness of breath (especially with activity), or a history of smoking. Early diagnosis helps slow progression.
More Information
A pulmonologist manages COPD. Treatment includes smoking cessation, inhalers, pulmonary rehabilitation, and sometimes oxygen. Vaccinations (flu, pneumococcal) are recommended.
