Symptom guide
Back Pain
Pain in the lower or upper back, often from muscle strain, disc issues, or posture. Very common condition.
Overview
Back pain is one of the most common medical complaints. It can arise from muscles, ligaments, discs, or bones. Most acute back pain improves with rest, activity modification, and over-the-counter pain relief.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if pain is severe, lasts more than a few weeks, radiates down the leg, or is accompanied by numbness, weakness, fever, or bowel/bladder changes.
What you should know
An orthopedist or physiatrist can evaluate and recommend treatment, which may include physical therapy, medication, or imaging.
Most cases do not require surgery.
