Nausea & Vomiting

Gastroenterologist, GP

Overview

Nausea is the urge to vomit; vomiting is the forceful expulsion of stomach contents. Causes include viral gastroenteritis, food poisoning, medication side effects, pregnancy, motion sickness, and digestive or neurological conditions.

When to See a Doctor

Seek care if vomiting lasts more than 24–48 hours, you cannot keep fluids down, there is blood in vomit, or you have severe abdominal pain or signs of dehydration.

More Information

Stay hydrated with small sips. A gastroenterologist can evaluate persistent or severe nausea. Treatment may include antiemetic medication and addressing the underlying cause.
