Temporary rise in body temperature, often due to infection. Chills often accompany fever.
Overview
Fever is a temporary rise in body temperature, often due to infection. Chills often accompany fever as the body works to raise its temperature.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if fever is high (e.g. over 39°C/102°F), lasts more than 3 days, or is accompanied by rash, severe headache, stiff neck, or difficulty breathing.
What you should know
Rest and fluids are important.
Over-the-counter fever reducers may help.
The underlying cause (viral or bacterial) should be identified by a healthcare provider when needed.
