Symptom guide
Sore Throat
Pain or scratchiness in the throat, often from viral infection. Can also be due to strep or allergies.
Overview
Sore throat (pharyngitis) is pain or irritation in the throat, often worse when swallowing. Most cases are viral (cold, flu); some are bacterial (e.g. strep throat). Allergies and dry air can also cause throat discomfort.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if sore throat is severe, lasts more than a week, is accompanied by high fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a rash. Strep testing may be needed.
What you should know
Rest, fluids, and over-the-counter pain relievers help.
Antibiotics are only for bacterial infections (e.g.
strep).
An ENT can evaluate chronic or recurrent sore throats.
